It’s Your Call on Flip Night Wednesday at The Front Porch

Heads or Tails

It’s Flip Night Wednesdays, and that mean yet another chance to drink for free at the trendy downtown Denver bar, The Front Porch. Come for the potential free drinks, stay for the atmosphere and the friendly bartenders. The Front Porch promises a good time to all who stop by, and whereas nothing is as important as a free drink, the coin toss has been behind many other historical events.

How Portland Got It's Name

But for the flip of a coin, Portland, Oregon was almost named Boston, Oregon. It’s true. Upon discovering Portland – then called The Clearing – two New England natives could not decide who got to name the 640-acres of land, and so, they flipped a coin. Francis Pettygrove of Portland, Maine, won the two out of three tosses over Asa Lovejoy of Boston, and the rest is history.

In 1959 Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valend and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson was deep into their successful Winter Dance Party Tour across the United States. One fateful night in Iowa, Buddy Holly chartered a flight to the next destination due to mechanical troubles with his tour bus. All the seats were accounted for, except for one. Ritche Valens, wanting a seat on the plane, flipped a coin with a guitarist in Holly’s band, and well, technically Valens won the coin toss, and the last seat of the plane, but I think we can all agree that everyone lost that day.

Big Red

In 1969, two unborn foals, sired by the magnificent racehorse, Bold Ruler, became the subject of the greatest coin toss in horse racing history. Two prominent stable owners, Penny Chenery of Meadow Stable and Ogden Phipps of Wheatley Stable, flipped a coin to see who got first pick of the foals. The coin toss went to Phipps who picked the new born filly. This left Chenery with the yet-unborn foal. Two years later, that unborn colt would grow up to be known to the world as Secretariat and just one year later, Secretariat exceeded all expectation and took the Triple Crown at the Belmont Stakes. His victory is to this day only rivaled by Wilt Chamberlain.
