The Front Porch: the best place to enjoy a cold nice beer!

A Little Beer History

Beer is one of the world’s oldest prepared beverages, possibly dating back to around 9500 BC. As hunter-gatherer tribes settled into agrarian civilizations based around staple crops like wheat, rice, barley and maize, they may have also stumbled upon the fermentation process and started brewing beer. It was such a discovery, that archaeologists speculate that beer was instrumental in the formation of civilizations by inspiring new agricultural technologies.

The Most Popular Types of beer

Lager

This is the world’s most popular beer style and it varies from the pale gold, through every shade of yellow to a deep golden colour. Lagers are fermented cold, so in comparison with ales, more of the delicate flavors from the malt and hops come through into the glass. They are normally light in color and vary widely in flavour and strength. US lagers tend to be low in bitterness and delicately flavored. Lagers popular in Britain such as Carling and Fosters have a fuller flavour, followed by robust continentals like Belgium’s Stella Artois, Denmark’s Carlsberg, Grolsch and Heineken from Holland, Becks and Holsten from Germany or Pilsner Urquell from the Czech Republic.

Ale

Ales are generally fruitier and fuller flavored than lagers because they are fermented at a higher temperature. They can vary from straw-colored like the Boddingtons and Oakham JHB, to the jet black of Guinness. Historically, until the arrival of lightly kilned malts in the early 1800s, all ales would have been brownish and rather smoky from the wood fired kilns.

Stout

Stout and porter are dark beers made using roasted malts or roast barley, and typically brewed with slow fermenting yeast. There are a few variations including Baltic porter, dry stout, and Imperial stout. The name Porter was first used in 1721 to describe a dark brown beer popular with the street and river porters of London, which later also became known as stout. The history and development of stout and porter are intertwined.
